In 2014 Kayedem was contracted by Monaghans ltd, to carry out the site enabling works to the former Nutall Sweet factory in preparation for the development of an Aldi food store. Kayedem managed the removal of all Asbestos-containing materials on-site, ranging from pipe lagging, cement products, insulation board and textiles. A full scaffold was erected around a 30m link bridge to allow the construction of an asbestos removal enclosure to allow the safe removal of pipe lagging containing Amosite asbestos.

A temporary works package was incorporated into the contract including various propping and shoring techniques being used to act as support to Queens road. The main manufacturing facility which was to be demolished was acting as a buttress to the highway, a series of raking shores were used to support the wall throughout the demolition process.

Kayedem carried out the full demolition of the 3-story steel-framed sweet factory structure with associated basements throughout, the substructure to the entire site was excavated and grubbed out. All brick, concrete and stone products were crushed to 6f2 specification (70mm down to dust), and the crushed materials were used to backfill the basement voids in 300mm layers and rolled to achieve a 94% compaction rating. Due to the Queens road, a permanent propping solution consisting of sheet piles, Kayedem’s internal engineers proposed a temporary propping solution that would give access to a sheet pile rig and also cause no obstructions. Kayedem progressively removed the raking shores but installed a high-level pile mat formed from a 6f2 crushed concrete. The pile matt consisted of a ramp with 1 in 5 gradients to allow the pilling rig high-level access, a 10m wide working platform and a 1 in 2 angles of repose to the side elevation of the pile matt.
