Aldi Food stores purchased the former Yorkshire Bank head office in 2017, with a view to demolishing the existing 4-floor superstructure, removing of underground vault substructure and constructing a new retail store with associated car parking.
The former bank was constructed from a steel frame design with precast Bison slab floors and mass masonry infill walls throughout with ribbon windows on each floor plate. The basement structure which housed the former vault was a mass-filled concrete design, which was heavily reinforced with steel 16mm steel rebar. Due to the strength of the concrete during removal, it was assumed the concrete was a purpose-designed high-strength mix with a granite aggregate additive.
KayeDem was initially appointed to carry out all asbestos removal within the structure, which consisted of Asbestos insulating board (AIB), asbestos-containing cement products and various textile products. Following the asbestos removal and soft strip out of the former bank head office, Kayedem demolished the high-rise structure by use of Komatsu, PC490HRD-10 High Reach demolition excavator which progressively demolished the steel-framed structure.
The underground vault structure was broken out by the use of 30-ton Doosan DX 300 excavators with hydraulic hammer attachments and Pulverisers to break down the immense sub-structure. The entire underground structure was excavated, and all suitable arisings were crushed by the use of a Terex XR400 jaw crusher to a recycled aggregate product, commonly known as 6F2. which consists of concrete and brick crushed down to form a 75mm to dust aggregate product. This product was used to backfill the basement area, which was completed in 300mm layers and compacted by the use of a Hamm vibrating roller to achieve the specified compaction rating.
