In the late morning of 28th January 2016, Drummonds Mill perished in a ferociously powerful blaze. Up to 100 firefighters from the city’s fire crews. the fire started at approximately 11.30 am. By the afternoon it had spread to the rest of Grade II listed, 1885-built, four-story mill complexes. It had been designed by the architects Lockwood and Mawson, the same firm responsible for the City Hall.
It was agreed the entire mill complex was a dangerous structure and was a total loss beyond repair and restoration. Kayedem were contracted by SKA textiles Chairman Khalid Pervaiz to initially make safe the site, by installing a number of exclusion zones in and around the defected structures and now visible basements/substructure. During the demolition process, Kayedem’s team encountered numerous obstacles due to the fact this blaze had left so many unknowns when compared to a standard planned demolition project. For example, 6 weeks into the programme Kayedem discovered a fire hotspot within one of the basement voids, when excavated the smouldering material ignited which was quickly contained by West Yorkshire Fire Service with assistance from our team.
Kayedem demolished all structures on-site and backfilled all basements and voids with crushed material on time and in budget. Kayedem has since worked for SKA Developments and has become good friends with the Pervaiz family.
